Our Vision

Our Values

Our Beliefs

We invite you to explore our beliefs and join us in our pursuit of living out our faith in boldness and passion.

  • We believe in the full deity and humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death on the cross for our sins, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension and present reign at the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory to raise the dead, judge the world and make all things new.

  • We believe that man receives salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and that the presence of saving faith is revealed by a life lived in obedience to the will of God.

  • We believe that for the salvation of the lost, sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

  • We believe that the entire Bible is inspired of God, that it is trustworthy in all that it teaches and that it can be rightly interpreted and applied to us only by its Divine Author, the Holy Spirit.

  • We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe that the essential baptism is that of the Holy Spirit, in which all who participate become members of the body of Christ.

  • Christ came to fulfill the law and left no continuing rites as means of grace to be binding upon Christians. We believe in the peaceable kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who, by His teaching, example and Spirit within us, gives us power to overcome evil with good and hatred through love.

Our name of "Friends" comes from Jesus words to His disciples: "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."

We are one of many churches who are apart of the Friends Southwest Movement. Find out more about Friends using the button below.

Who are Friends?

Our History

Sacramento Friends Community Church began as a humble Sunday School outreach in 1936, founded by Harriet Cowan in the Gardenland area of Sacramento. What started under a weeping willow tree soon moved into a small home, and by the early 1940s, the growing community built a small chapel. In 1945, the church officially affiliated with the California Yearly Meeting of Friends, securing support and leadership from the larger Friends movement.

Over the decades, the church grew under dedicated pastors and, in 1967, moved to its current location at 40th and E Streets. The relocation marked a season of rapid growth, with attendance tripling by 1972 and a strong emphasis on community outreach and discipleship. Throughout leadership transitions and cultural shifts, the church has remained committed to its mission of creating a welcoming and transformative environment for all.

At the end of 2023, longtime Lead Pastor Jim retired, closing a faithful chapter of leadership. In April 2024, the congregation welcomed Pastor Jared Reiter, ushering in an exciting new season of growth and vision. Under his leadership, Sacramento Friends is embracing a renewed passion for reaching unchurched families in the neighborhood, deepening discipleship through small groups, and building authentic connections in East Sacramento.

With this fresh momentum, we are more committed than ever to creating a Christ-centered community that is changing the world. Whether you're seeking community, renewal, or a fresh start in your faith, we invite you to be part of this journey with us.
