Radically Ordinary Hospitality: How to Truly Love Your Neighbor

At Friends Church Sacramento, we’ve been walking through a teaching series called It’s Good to Share, rediscovering what it means for the church to live sent. This week, we looked at one of Jesus’ most famous stories: the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37.

In this story, Jesus shows us something profound: knowing the right answers isn’t enough. The expert in the law could recite Scripture, but he still missed the heart of God. True neighbor love isn’t about religious knowledge — it’s about compassion in action.

And the Samaritan in Jesus’ story didn’t perform a miracle. He didn’t do something flashy. He simply stopped, cared, and helped with what he had. That’s radically ordinary hospitality — opening our lives and resources to love the people God places in our path.

The same is true for us. Our neighbors aren’t projects to avoid or problems to solve; they’re people made in the image of God. And God is calling us not just to know His love but to live it in practical ways.

At Friends Church Sacramento, we believe that when the church lives sent, the community sees Christ. That starts with something as simple as opening your front door, sharing a meal, or offering a listening ear.

As we look ahead to Back to Church Sunday on September 21, we’re excited to invite our neighbors to encounter Jesus. But the truth is, living sent isn’t just about one Sunday. It’s about making radically ordinary hospitality a way of life.

So, what door could you open this week? Your front door, your back door, or even your car door? However you do it, choose to be a neighbor. Because through ordinary hospitality, God does extraordinary things.
